The best way to trim lodging expenses is to rent a vacation home, preferably directly from an owner, to avoid costly management fees. Overall, the cost of a rental home is much lower than comparable amenities in a traditional hotel, inn, or resort setting. Additional savings can be substantial if you utilize the kitchen and laundry facilities. Eating in, for a large family, can be very economical and is very relaxing when traveling with small children. And doing your laundry becomes easy and inexpensive. I'm thinking about a family trip to London where we devoted a small fortune to hotel laundering until I found coin washers in a shop nearby - never again! - we have rented since wherever we go. Sharing a house with family and/or friends is a wonderful way to build in relaxation time or steal away for a round of golf or a tennis match. Much can be shared, whether it's shopping for dinner and barbecuing the main course, or taking children to a local attraction or an after dinner ice cream; and everyone has plenty of play time. A few suggestions: research the location of the rental house for it's convenience and safety, ask questions and if you don't get satisfactory answers move on, request photos of bedrooms and bathrooms in addition to the general photos on websites, and beware paying more than a deposit to hold your reservation.
